The Guayanes region covers the municipalities of Yabucoa, Maunabo, Patillas, Arroyo and the barrios in adjacent municipalities. The region is of significant ethnohistorical importance due to its geographical situation. The region was the gateway for archaic and pre-Taino migrations from South America. These migration waves have left an inedible mark on the landscape and inhabitants of the region.
<>
The ethnocultural mixture between the Indigenous population with Europeans and Africans has also left its imprint on the region. The Jibaro-Taino heritage has survived in the more remote communities. Here the fogon (barbacoa), tormentera (barraca), batey, and the bohio are still part of the cultural landscape.
